The Orbiter's wings are used to maneuver the ship when it enters the Earth├òs atmosphere and comes in for a landing. They are similar to the delta wings of a jet fighter and are <a href="text">aerodynamically</a> designed to fly faster than the speed of sound. From tip to tip, the wings have a span of almost 24 metres (80 feet).
